Christopher Hernandez displays a video game he created. Hernandez has wanted to design video games since he was a kid. Now, he's taking classes at Mt. Hood Community College to learn design skills.At age 7, Christopher Hernandez created a video game out of paper. He drew characters, painstakingly cut them out, then arranged them on his bedroom floor for his younger brother to pretend to play.
He didn't have a computer. He had never heard of someone making a living as video game designer.

Gresham police are investigating a shooting that left one man with wounds to his hand and foot.
Police said the victim, who was in his mid-30s, walked into the Tortilleria y Tienda de Leon near Northeast 162nd Avenue and Northeast Glisan Street on Saturday afternoon after being shot in the parking lot. It is unclear what led to the shooting.
The man was taken to Legacy Emanuel Hospital and treated for the injuries, which were not life-threatening, said Gresham police Sgt. Michael LeDuc.

Portland renews effort to help prostitutes get off the streets

Portland officials have selected LifeWorks Northwest, a nonprofit agency, to help up to 60 prostitutes in Multnomah County find jobs, housing or the self-esteem to get off the streets over the next year.
The city will provide $250,000 to the county to oversee the program, under an agreement the City Council is expected to approve today.

Police say an unsupervised predatory sex offender is living in and around Lewis & Clark State Park in East Multnomah County.
Deputy Paul McRedmond, a spokesman for the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office, said the warning is a cautionary notification and that James Leigh Springer, 46, is not wanted and is complying with the terms of his supervision requirements.

The week of the election, someone added the president-elect to a list of suggestions. "Kids in the cafeteria were excited," says Chris Aanderud, the Southeast Portland school's principal. "That's when the idea started surfacing."

TIGARD -- The Tigard-Tualatin School District plans to file a complaint with the state's teacher licensing agency against a high school principal who resigned Thursday.
Tigard High School Principal Jonathan Schuhl resigned after acknowledging that he was arrested Oct. 31 for driving with a suspended license, which he forfeited in April when he was stopped by police near Sunriver and refused to take a breath test, school officials said.

FAIRVIEW -- The U-Haul arrived early. The movers backed into the garage, barely missing the "For Sale" sign. They hopped out, pulled a ramp from the back of the truck and got ready to work.
They expected customers at the door. Instead, a Multnomah County sheriff's deputy answered their knock.
In Oregon, punctuality means nothing if you don't have the proper state licenses -- for packing, loading and moving with a truck.

Authorities in Arlington, Va., are investigating the death of a 22-year-old Marine from Troutdale whose body was found lying on a highway there last weekend.
Pfc. Maddison Peterson, a former Sam Barlow High School football player whose coach remembers him as "one of the most gifted athletes I have ever worked with," had been stationed at Marine Barracks Washington in Washington, D.C. His mother, Pam Peterson, said he had been assigned to a presidential guard unit in the nation's capital.

William Jacob Bergin A former Sandy police officer turned himself in to authorities today after he was charged with identity theft, first-degree official misconduct and misuse of a license.
William Jacob Bergin, 27, surrendered at the Clackamas County Jail after he was indicted by a grand jury. The indictment did not provide details of the accusations against Bergin.
He was released on his own recognizance, pending his Dec. 11 arraignment in Clackamas County Circuit Court.
Government Camp could become Oregon's newest city

The Clackamas County commissioners today agreed to let voters in Government Camp decide whether they area will become Oregon's newest city.
If voters approve the change in May 2010, property owners will pay a new tax of 76 cents per $1,000 of assessed property value, which amounts to about $190 a year for a $250,000 house. Incorporation would also qualify the city for a portion of state gas tax revenue.

FAIRVIEW -- The Reynolds School District may cut nine days this school year as part of the interim superintendent's plan to make up for a budget shortfall of more than $3 million.
The district -- which covers five cities from Portland to Sandy -- will save $290,000 for every day it cuts, Interim Superintendent Robert Fisher said in a crowded public meeting tonight. The board did not vote on his plan.

A 19-year-old woman is accused this morning of abandoning her infant daughter so she could go drinking with friends.
Gresham police said Gloria C. Moore went out with friends last Thursday and left her 10-month-old alone in a playpen. The girl was abandoned for six hours. When finally found, she was in a puddle of her own urine, police said.
Moore is being held on a Multnomah County jail this morning and faces accusations of child neglect.
Police were called to the scene of the Berry Ridge Apartments in the 2700 block of W. Powell Boulevard early Friday morning. Moore had gotten into a shouting match with her friends, police said. The friends thought Moore had left the child in the care of a sitter. Moore at first refused to permit her friends into her apartment, and when she finally did, they found the child alone in her playpen.

North Powellhurst School closes for cleaning after dozens of kids fall ill

North Powellhurst School will be closed Monday and Tuesday to allow health officials to thoroughly clean the school after more than 60 students stayed home Friday due to a suspected stomach virus, according to the David Douglas School District.
The school already was set to be closed Tuesday in observance of Veteran's Day, but officials added Monday to provide a four-day window to both sanitize the school and allow students to fully recover, according to a statement from the district. Classes will resume Wednesday.

TriMet shut down service tonight in the area of 197th Avenue and Burnside Street after a hit-and-run accident left a man critically injured, police said.
Officers responded to a 9-1-1 call about 9 p.m. and found a man with head injuries lying on MAX tracks, said Michael LeDuc, a Gresham Police Department spokesman.
Gresham man sentenced to 10 years in child's death

A 40-year-old Gresham man convicted of failing to seek medical attention to save his 2-year-old foster daughter's life was sentenced to 10 years in prison this morning.
Armando Moreno-Garcia sat emotionless and declined to say anything when given a chance, before being sentenced to the mandatory prison term laid out by Oregon law.
A 12-person Multnomah County jury found Moreno-Garcia guilty last week of first-degree manslaughter in the death of Keyana Bravo-Hamilton, who was beaten, burned and lost large clumps of hair from abuse in the months before her death on Sept. 4, 2006. Moreno-Garcia, and his wife Dunia Soledad Moreno, brought Keyanas cold and lifeless body to Mount Hood Medical Center. Medical staff and police immediately suspected child abuse.

The Multnomah Education Service District and AFSCME Local 1995 have reached a settlement resolving legal actions against the district stemming from the December 2007 strike.
As part of it, the district will distribute $75,000 equally among all employees who went on strike and did not return to work until January 2008.

Investigators say a Portland apartment where they found two young girls living in squalor and recovered balloon-packaged heroin worth $500 this morning was so filthy that their eyes burned.
The 7 a.m. raid by the Multnomah County sheriff's Special Investigations Unit at the Alder Village Apartments at 16000 S.E. Stark Street followed a tip from Gresham police and a two-week investigation.

Earlier this month, the Gresham Goodwill - the second busiest Goodwill in the Pacific Northwest - received an unusual donation.
Stuck in a box of miscellaneous household items were three small urns holding cremated remains. One of the store's sorters opened the unsealed urns and found what appeared to be ashes. She took the discovery to her boss, who called Gresham police.
Ground broken on new FedEx facility in Troutdale

Officials broke ground in Troutdale today on a new $100 million distribution hub for FedEx Ground Package Systems, Inc.
The hub is at the Port of Portland's new Troutdale Reynolds Industrial Park, once the site of the Reynolds Metals aluminum smelter.
The company's plans include a 415,000-square-foot facility with 700 jobs, including package handlers, clerks, technicians, service managers, shift workers and drivers. The new hub should be operating by 2010.

Bridge work will limit use of trail in Gorge

Access to a well-used trail in the Columbia River Gorge will be limited beginning Monday as crews remove a rotting bridge.
Officials from the U.S. Forest Service hope to replace the Triple Falls Bridge, along Oneonta Trail, sometime next spring.
The trail will remain open from the Historic Columbia River Highway to the overlook, but the bridge closure restricts connection to Horsetail Creek Trail.

Lawmakers find nothing illegal about severance packages given to two school officials

Talks continue between Boeing, Machinists union

Negotiations to end a 51-day strike against the Boeing Co. continued today with no word on progress.
Federal mediators called Machinists union and Boeing negotiators to the table in Washington, D.C., on Thursday. Neither side has said whether any progress has been made, but both say it's a good sign that the talks are continuing.
Man shot, but not in drive-by

Gresham police say a man claiming to have been shot in the leg by three men driving by in a black car apparently shot himself.
Miguel Gonzalez-Sanchez, 38, called police about 6 p.m. Saturday from a convenience store on Northeast 181st Avenue. He said he had gotten off a TriMet bus and was walking along 181st near an Interstate 84 overpass when men shot him in the upper leg.
But officers found no evidence -- such as spent shell casings or trail of blood -- and determined that Gonzalez-Sanchez had shot himself at a nearby transient camp.
He was taken to Legacy Emanuel Hospital in Portland. The injury was not considered life-threatening, police said.
Oregon lawmaker to investigate severance packages given to two school officials

State Sen. Vicki Walker, D-Eugene, will hold a hearing Monday to investigate whether the severance packages given to two former superintendents violate Oregon law.
In recent weeks, the Reynolds School District gave former superintendent Terry Kneisler a severance package worth $200,000 and the Lebanon School District gave former superintendent Jim Robinson a package worth $400,000.
Two men sought in Gresham kidnap of woman

Two high-profile public safety projects are in jeopardy as Multnomah County wrestles with the effects of the national economic downturn, county Chairman Ted Wheeler said Thursday.
Wheeler told a packed room of county employees that he was seeking an immediate 4 percent cut in government spending to prepare for tighter times ahead. The move makes both layoffs and reductions in social services and public safety services a possibility, though nothing is set yet.

Financially strapped Reynolds district asks public for suggestions on cuts

The Reynolds School Board is asking the public to suggest money-saving ideas.
The school district had planned to spend $2.6 million more from its main operating fund than its revenues provide this fiscal year, ending with $42,800. But earlier this month, new interim superintendent Robert Fisher found an additional $3 million to $4 million in unbudgeted expenses that the district must pay for this year.
Pair arrested in Columbia Gorge car break-in

Oregon State Police arrested two people Wednesday after a car break-in at a popular Columbia River Gorge trailhead.
Police say an alert park ranger tipped them off to the theft at the Angels Rest parking lot, the closest trail to the metro area on Interstate 84, where about 20 percent of all reported gorge break-ins have occurred this year.

TROUTDALE -- A new segment of the 40-mile loop trail with views of the Sandy River opens Thursday.
The 1.8-mile segment was built atop a levee near the former Reynolds Metals aluminum smelter. It borders wetlands and open space on one side and industrial property, including the planned FedEx Ground distribution center, on the other. The trail was built with a $100,000 grant from Oregon State Parks.
City of Sandy outlaws novelty lighters

Spanish-language Internet safety workshop set

Police today said 38 officers responded Saturday to a birthday party that turned into a riot, in what Gresham police are saying is the city's largest melee in almost 20 years.
Police were called about 10:30 p.m. to a fight involving at least 20 men. Officers tried to intervene but were assaulted, and when more officers arrived, the scene worsened.

GRESHAM -- The deal that Gresham City Hall brokered to build the first phase of residential development in Pleasant Valley is "very unlikely" to go forward now that Pacific Lifestyle Homes Inc., one of its three private partners, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, the city's executive manager said Thursday.
The Clark County-based company, which moved into the Gresham market in 1999, declared Wednesday its intent to file for bankruptcy protection as it seeks to reorganize.

Five arrested in Gresham burglary

Gresham police arrested five people Monday on burglary-related accusations in the theft of about $2,000 in items.
Police say the burglary took place at about 10:40 a.m., when jewelry, a digital camera and collector coins went missing from a mobile home in the 20100 block of Northeast Sandy Boulevard.
Boeing Machinists union posts note saying talks have begun

A note saying talks with a federal mediator were under way was posted today on the union's Web site. Spokeswoman Connie Kelliher said she did not know where the talks were being conducted.

Gresham police have arrested a 14-year-old boy in the theft of a motorized wheelchair.
The theft occurred Oct. 2, while the chair's owner, a 44-year-old Portland woman, shopped at a Gresham thrift store. Following news reports Wednesday, a 38-year-old man came forward and said he bought the wheelchair from two teens for $75.
