It's Raining Again? Head to the Japanese Garden

    by Inara Verzemnieks, The Oregonian
    Wednesday August 20, 2008, 7:00 AM

This will seem counter-intuitive I know, but you must trust me. I have it on authority from people who know best: Portland's Japanese Garden is gorgeous in the rain. Some people even prefer to see it when the leaves are all wet, the stones soaked. The colors change, the shadows deepen. Gray, I have been told, is a beautiful backdrop. So take advantage of these August showers and head over there right now. And you get the added bonus of being able to see the garden's annual art show and sale: Behind the Shoji, which runs through Sept. 2. 611 SW Kingston Ave., Tuesday to Sunday 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. (Mondays noon to 7 p.m.) $8 adults.

Transgendered contestant to appear on 'America's Next Top Model'

    by Alley Hector, OregonLive.com
    Tuesday August 19, 2008, 2:03 PM

The openly transgendered Isis will be in the next season of 'America's Next Top Model'
By now we've all seen the cutesy dyke takes on the fashion world that began with Kim Stolz in Cycle 5 of America's Next Top Model. But that was five whole seasons ago and, believe me, lesbians are so out-of-season. So Tyra Banks has upped the ante in the upcoming Top Model cycle with an openly transgendered contestant, Isis.

The 22-year-old, a former non-profit worker from Maryland, identifies herself as "a woman born physically male."

Jackstraw's bluegrass licks on Main Street

by Don Campbell, special to The Oregonian
    Tuesday August 12, 2008, 3:29 PM

    Jackstraw

When last we left one of Portland's favorite bands of intrepid bluegrass minstrels, Jackstraw had released two stellar CDs, "Rubber Wheels" and "Live at the White Eagle." With their mix of bluegrass and Americana, they've continued barnstorming around the country behind those two projects, building up a sizable fan base.

We caught up with guitarist Darrin Craig at the tail end of a Colorado vacation.

A sweet spot for Sweet Tarts

by Michael C. Zusman, special to The Oregonian
    Wednesday August 13, 2008, 8:41 AM

    Two Tarts goodies

Fans of Portland Farmers Market cookie darling Two Tarts will be thrilled to learn that the tart team -- Elizabeth Beekley and Anna Phelps -- is opening a real store in Northwest Portland next month, with about 50 two-bite cookies in their repertoire. Two Tarts started at the Market in 2007 expecting only to be allowed to stay through the spring. A "Save the Tarts" campaign helped make it a fixture and paved the way for the impending year-round expansion.

Artful Mischief At The 100th Monkey Studio

    by Inara Verzemnieks, The Oregonian
    Monday August 11, 2008, 11:37 AM

Jessica Breedlove leads a Girls Empowerment Camp at The 100th Monkey Studio. Breedlove is also featured in the current show at the studio, themed, "Mischief."

Scanning through the listings of recent art openings, it's hard not to be drawn to one that promises to be all about "mischief."

"Artists' work varies depending on their personal experience," the Web site notes. Which, of course, makes me even more curious and my mind go wild: What kind of levels of personal experience are we talking about? When it comes to mischief, the possibilities are tantalizingly endless.

I am, apparently, not the only one drawn in by this theme.

    Fiction Review: "Angel's Tip"

    by Peggy McMullen, The Oregonian
    Friday August 15, 2008, 4:48 PM

A ringing cell phone calls an abrupt halt to Ellie Hatcher's early morning jog in East River Park. It's not hers that's ringing, though; it's the phone of a young college student whose spring break visit to the big city came to a grisly end.

Ellie -- an NYPD detective making her second appearance in an Alafair Burke thriller, after last year's "Dead Connection" -- finds the grim mutilation of Chelsea Hart's body isn't all that's disturbing about the murder.

It's a case that seems to tie up quickly: Ellie and partner J.J. Rogan trace the young woman to an upscale nightclub and a VIP suite, where a credit card receipt and folks at the club tie Chelsea to snotty Jake Myers, a good-looking hedge fund manager.

Northwest Professional Dance Project presents a world of inventive movement

    by Marty Hughley, The Oregonian
    Sunday August 17, 2008, 2:40 PM

Cayetano Soto's "Last But Not Least"

A good contemporary dance performance can create its own compelling world. The Northwest Professional Dance Project's fifth annual "Showing by Dance Makers" brought glimpses of a half-dozen such creative spheres to Portland's Lincoln Hall, with brand-new works by such remarkable choreographers as Donald McKayle.

Friday reading: Win McCormack on GOP family values

    by Jeff Baker, The Oregonian
    Wednesday August 20, 2008, 6:20 AM

Win McCormack was talking about Republican sex scandals, a subject he examines in his new book "You Don't Know Me: A Citizen's Guide to Republican Family Values" (Tin House Books, $16.95 paperback, 304 pages).

Republicans are hypocritical, McCormack said, always lecturing the public on morals while cheating on their spouses, soliciting prostitutes, and worse. The examples are endless: Newt Gingrich, David Vitter, Larry Craig, Bob Barr, Arnold Schwarzenegger ...

    Uh, what about John Edwards?

"I was waiting for that," McCormack said. "I thought that might be the first question."

Buckwheat Zydeco at the Aladdin Theater

    by Luciana Lopez, The Oregonian
    Wednesday August 20, 2008, 6:02 AM

Dancing like a madwoman at this year's Safeway Waterfront Blues Festival convinced me (as if I needed it) of how incredibly much fun a good zydeco show is. Whether you're already a convert or need some convincing yourself, head out to see Buckwheat Zydeco at the Aladdin Tonight.

    Fashion Show Tonight

    by Inara Verzemnieks, The Oregonian
    Tuesday August 19, 2008, 2:00 PM

If you're looking for something to do tonight, head over to Zaytoon on Alberta and check out a fashion show by two young designers, Tafv Sampson and Katie Gargan. (Full disclosure: I am a big fan of Sampson's mom, writer Nancy Rommelmann.)

Sampson and Gargan are both 18, and have been pursuing their passion for design for quite some time now. This is their fourth show together. And it sounds like it will be a sweet glimpse into the beginning of something -- everything. As the little release about the show posted on craigslist put it, they "wanted to do another show together before Katie's journey to college in San Francisco at the end of August."

(Another great line from the craigslist posting -- Tafv's bio: "Influences for her designs are pulled from what is comfortable to her, and there is nothing more familiar to her than clutter and mess. Her room is an explosion of clothes, art and dirty dishes jumbled into one beast of a mess.") Like I said, sweet. Smart (and funny) too. 7:30 p.m. 2236 N.E. Alberta Street

"The Taking of Pelham One Two Three" Tuesday Night at Ecotrust

    by Kristi Turnquist, The Oregonian
    Tuesday August 19, 2008, 11:56 AM

A New York subway train, held hostage! A free movie! Pizza! Now, that's a Tuesday night.

Portlanders get more chances to watch outdoor movies every summer. This year, a nifty addition has been the "It's Crime Time" series, shown outdoors at the Ecotrust Building (721 N.W. Ninth Ave.). Last week, a receptive crowd pulled up chairs to watch "Chinatown" shown on a stand-up movie screen. Tuesday night, it's another oldie-but-goodie, "The Taking of Pelham One Two Three," a suspense thriller from 1974. Robert Shaw ("Jaws") plays the head of a gang that takes a subway car and passengers hostage. Fast pace, burst of comedy and a top-notch cast of character actors (Walter Matthau, Hector Elizondo, James Broderick -- father of Matthew -- and Jerry Stiller -- father of Ben) add texture. Grab a slice from Hot Lips Pizza, and pull up a chair. Free; starts at about 8 p.m.

Bakery Review: Little T American Baker

by Teri Gelber, special to The Oregonian
    Tuesday August 19, 2008, 11:13 AM

    The basics at Little T

Hunger may send us in search of our daily bread, but a great bakery fulfills so much more than our stomachs. If the formula is right -- warm crusty loaves, unforgettable sweets, good coffee and a "sit down, stay awhile" ambience -- a bakery becomes the hub of a community (not to mention your life).

Portland has one of the country's better baking scenes, with an artisan hub in every quadrant, from Pearl Bakery and Ken's Artisan in the Northwest to Fleur de Lis in the Northeast to Baker and Spice in the Southwest.

Oregon Symphony starts season without contract

    Tuesday August 19, 2008, 10:54 AM

After its customary summer off, the Oregon Symphony will begin its 113th season without a contract, Saturday. The season's first concert is at Mt. Scott Park, followed by the traditional music and fireworks program at Waterfront Park, Aug. 28.

    Comic Review: The Killer

    by Steve Duin, The Oregonian
    Tuesday August 19, 2008, 9:29 AM

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: The Killer, Archaia Studios' reprint of Matz and artist Luc Jacamon's 1998 French graphic novel, is one of the more intelligent -- and visually appealing -- comics on the stands today.

It's not on the stands often enough, but the long delayed seventh issue of the original 10-part series has finally arrived, and it maintains the seductive rhythm of the series. Their hit man is back from South America, lying low in Paris, trying to stay out of everyone's way as he tends to his battered girlfriend and plots his revenge on the three men who beat her unconscious:

Run Around in the Dark with a Bunch of Animals

    by Inara Verzemnieks, The Oregonian
    Tuesday August 19, 2008, 7:00 AM

OK, technically, this takes place at dusk. But I like to think it will be dark, and I imagine millions of glowing eyes, tracking my every move...Over at Smith and Bybee wetlands, they're hosting an event tonight called "Twilight Tuesday." Join Metro naturalist James Davis from 7 to 9:30 p.m., as he leads you on an hour and half walk around the wetlands in search of creatures that are best glimpsed at night, like bats, deer, otters and muskrats (!). So, if you are "quiet, sneaky and patient," as the website puts it, call and register a spot in advance at 503-797-1850, option 4. $10.

Climber at the Doug Fir Lounge

    by Luciana Lopez, The Oregonian
    Tuesday August 19, 2008, 6:28 AM

Lush indie-rockers Climber are in the middle of a residency at the Doug Fir Lounge, and they've promised me a special show tonight. The band emailed me:

This Tuesday (8/19), we in Climber will be attempting what for us is a daring musical escapade: we've drafted numerous friends, fellow musicians, and relatives to compile a Climber choir that will sing their hearts out on several tunes, most of them brand new. We hope that you can make it out to watch. As part of our August residency at Doug Fir, we've tried to mix things up a bit. This third week should be quite special, a highlight of sorts. There will also be performances from Bryan Free and Crosstide!

    When: Tonight
Where: Doug Fir Lounge, 830 E. Burnside
